Few people have left a mark on Flagstaff’s traditional music community quite like Tony Norris, a primary founder of Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music. A gifted musician, storyteller, mentor, and friend, Tony dedicated decades to sharing his love of bluegrass, old-time, and folk music. Whether he was on stage, leading a jam, welcoming newcomers, or volunteering behind the scenes, Tony embodied the warmth, generosity, and community spirit that define both FFOTM and Pickin’ in the Pines.

For many festivalgoers, Tony was the familiar voice of Pickin’ in the Pines. He served as one of the festival’s beloved emcees for 16 years, helping introduce countless artists with his signature wit and deep appreciation for the music. He also performed at the festival 10 times with several bands over the years, sharing the stage as both an entertainer and an ambassador for the music he loved.

Tony believed that traditional music was about more than great performances, it was about bringing people together. He welcomed everyone, from seasoned musicians to first-time festival attendees, making each person feel like they belonged. His passion for building community helped shape the welcoming atmosphere that has become the heart of Pickin’ in the Pines.

Although Tony is deeply missed, his legacy lives on through the many musicians, friends, and festivalgoers who were inspired by his dedication to traditional music. We are forever grateful for his contributions to Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music and Pickin’ in the Pines, and for the community he helped create through his passion, generosity, and love of music.
