by Julie Sullivan Chris Brashear and Peter McLaughlin are prolific songwriters with a vernacular propensity toward lyrics celebrating, chronicling and lamenting, the joys, sorrows and historic significance primarily of the West. Over a year ago, after a dreamy concert at the Colton House, Chris, Peter, accomplished musician and producer Todd Phillips, and their friend and promoter Julie Sullivan (of Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music) came up with the idea to collaborate on a Music Residency program in partnership with the Museum of Northern Arizona, whose mission is to inspire love of the Colorado Plateau. Ms. Sullivan thought this was a truly inspirational project worth pursuing, got buy-in from then director, Robert Breunig, and the residency was born. It was initially started last year as a creative experiment. Chris and Peter holed up in the magnificent setting of the Arts and Crafts bungalo writing and recording for about a week. The historic home was built and designed by Mary Russell-Ferrill Colton and Harold S. Colton, also founders of the Museum of Northern Arizona. It is widely known that the Colton's were huge fans and supporters of the arts and often had festive events with musicians and artists at their famous home. Mary Russell was a brilliant painter, advocate for the arts, and she and Harold enjoyed entertaining at the Colton House. We truly believe they would have approved of this collaborative project. Chris and Peter wrote several pieces while in residency, which will someday be featured on a recording. Chris, Peter & Todd will perform at Pickin' in the Pines Bluegrass and Acoustic Music Festival September 18-20, 2015. They will feature some of the residency materials on Sunday, September 20 at 12 pm. Additionally, they will offer [...]

We are excited to announce Oskar Blues Brewery as a new sponsor of Pickin' in the Pines for 2015! Oskar Blues also has a partnership with Pickin' in the Pines' headliners the Steep Canyon Rangers. The partnership between Grammy®-winning bluegrass ground-breakers and Oskar Blues Brewery is rooted in a shared passion for music, craft beer, the outdoors, and giving back to the community. We are thrilled to have their support for our 10th Anniversary! About Oskar Blues Brewery Founded as a funky little brewpub by Dale Katechis in 1997, Oskar Blues Brewery launched the craft beer-in-a-can apocalypse in 2002, using a tabletop machine that sealed one can at a time. In 2008, the makers of the top-selling pale ale in ColoRADo, Dale's Pale Ale, added a brewery in Longmont, ColoRADo. The brewery has since experienced explosive growth-from packaging 59,000 barrels of beer in 2011 to 149,000 barrels in 2014. In December 2012, Oskar Blues opened the doors to an expansion brewery in Brevard, North Carolina. Oskar Blues has continued craft can innovation by introducing the CROWLER as a canned off-premise growler alternative. The innovative, original canned craft brewery now distributes trail-blazing craft brews to 44 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., as well as parts of Canada, Sweden, and the U.K. For more information and social media visit http://www.oskarblues.com.
We are so grateful to have Arizona Music Pro as a sponsor of Pickin' in the Pines for all 10 years! For Pickin' in the Pines 10th Anniversary, AMP has generously donated this beautiful Taylor 520 mahogany dreadnought guitar. Enter our raffle for your chance to win! Visit our booth at the Flagstaff Folk Festival June 27-28 to buy your raffle and festival tickets, visit flagfolkfest.org for more details. We will also be selling tickets at events throughout the summer. Look for our booth at the Celtic Festival, Coconino County Fair, concerts at Pepsi Amphitheater and at Pickin' in the Pines. The Taylor 520 mahogany dreadnought guitar has the potent tone flatpickers and strummers love. This guitar pairs a traditional acoustic body style with a classic tonewood, resulting in an extra punchy midrange (especially the upper mids) that will respond well to assertive strummers and pickers. A black pickguard, grained ivoroid binding and rosette, and a neo-vintage Century fretboard inlay add old-school aesthetic appeal. Pickers and strummers with an aggressive attack will love the Dreadnought’s blend of power and articulation, which allows for clear lead lines and crisp, driving rhythms.

The Knockabouts’ have a perfect blend of time-honored tradition, bawdy good taste, rowdy energies and smooth harmonies wrapped up in the best of authentic Celtic music. Pickin’ in the Pines 2014 band contest winners Cisco & the Racecars have their roots in traditional bluegrass music, but this six-piece band mixes popular, old-time, and acoustic country tunes that unite for an exciting musical fusion. These three Arizona based bands bring an eclectic mix of acoustic music to Pickin’ in the Pines for our 10th Anniversary that you won’t want to miss! Visit our lineup page for more details.

Beppe Gambetta is coming back in 2015 to join the Pickin' in the Pines lineup and to host the Beppe Gambetta Guitar Camp, intensive flatpicking guitar workshops! These three distinctive workshops will explore a fascinating journey in flatpicking techniques viewed from the broad perspective of Italian guitarist Beppe Gambetta. Beppe lives on the road 270 days out of the year, and gets his main musical inspiration from his traveling life. While his style is deeply rooted in American traditional flatpicking, Beppe has also done extensive research into the old musical forms of Europe, which inform the basis for his compositions. Widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s foremost guitarists, Beppe Gambetta is a true master innovator on the acoustic guitar. Both as a solo act and in collaboration with top-flight musicians around the globe, Beppe has a style that’s memorable both for its deeply emotive tone and for its technical brilliance. Beppe approaches his music from a unique stance, as an Italian musician in love with both American roots music as well as the music of his native country. He seamlessly bridges the shores of the two continents, creating a musical fusion where American and Ligurian tradition, emigration songs and folk ballads interact, weaving a deep dialogue beyond rigid classification.
We are excited to announce that Chris Brashear, Peter McLaughlin and Todd Phillips will perform at Pickin' in the Pines 2015! Chris Brashear and Peter McLaughlin have performed and recorded together for over twenty years. Their previous duet recordings, Canyoneers (2003) and So Long Arizona (2008), established them as leading performance artists and creative lyricists with a particular interest in the Southwest. Grammy-award winning bassist and producer Todd Phillips is no stranger to the collaborative and creative process. His entire musical life has been dedicated to musical projects that are on the cutting edge of acoustic music. The Colton House residency has helped to add significantly, both in creative terms and in terms of public awareness, to an already impressive body of work by lyricists who have developed writing skills from traditional roots. This residency can be seen as laying the groundwork for future arts and education programs that benefit directly from the wonderful resources provided by the Museum of Northern Arizona.
We are thrilled to add the Steep Canyon Rangers to the lineup for 2015! The Steep Canyon Rangers started as a group of friends playing music together for fun, but after more than a dozen years together, they are instantly recognized as one of the most successful bluegrass bands touring today. Their recordings and dynamic live performances have earned them many accolades, including Grammy and IBMA Awards, but most important, is the devotion of their fans. The Steep Canyon Rangers are Woody Platt (guitar), Graham Sharp (banjo), Charles Humphrey (bass), Mike Guggino (mandolin), Nicky Sanders (fiddle) and Mike Ashworth (box kit). Visit the Pickin' in the Pines lineup page for more information.
