Contra Dancing Events
Contra dancing is a big part of Flagstaff Friends of Traditional Music. We host a FFOTM contra dance on the first Saturday of each month, at Ashurst Hall on the NAU campus. Contra dancing is a gereat way to meet new friends and become more familiar with traditional music. Instruction is provided at all of our dances; no experience is necessary and no partner is required. We have three great opportunities to experience contra dancing at Pickin' in the Pines. All events take place in the Commercial Building.
Afternoon Family Dance 12 pm to 1:30 pm • Saturday
This dance, sponsored by Bookman's Entertainment Exchange, is a great introduction to some of the basic elements of contra dancing. This dance is geared toward children and their families, but all are welcome. Music is provided by the Sandia Hots, with calling by Richard Wilson. Admission is free.
Saturday Night Contra Dance 7:30 - 11pm • Saturday
Richard Wilson will call the steps for this evening’s dance, and the Sandia Hots will provide the music. Thanks to the Nutrioso Town Association, we are proud to provide a wooden floor for your dancing enjoyment. Wear comfortable shoes. Drinks and snacks will be available. Admission is free for holders of weekend or Saturday festival passes or $7 per person.
Waltz Workshop 11 am - 12:30 pm • Sunday
Waltzes are a popular addition at our monthly contra dance. They provide a nice change of pace from the allemandes and do-si-dos and are played during the breaks and at the end of the evening. The Sandia Hots and Richard Wilson team up again on Sunday to show you how to keep your moves smooth and fluent in 3/4 time. Admission is free.
